SUBMITTING TO THE BISHOP
In today’s world people are rebellious, due to the modern teaching of too much individual rights and excessive democracy. Companies are having problems with their rebellious workers. And churches today are also plagued by rebellious Christians. One of the reasons why I wrote this article its because a friend of mine told me a story about submitting to God’s ordained authority and also my personal experience when I learned to submit my life to the presiding Bishop of the Christian United Church, H.E. Rev. Bishop David C. Strong.
THE BISHOP’S OFFICE IS BIBLICAL
The Bishop’s office is heaven sent. Even our Lord Jesus Christ was called a Bishop.
1Peter 2:25(KJV) “For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls…”
The first Christians elected their Bishops.
Titus 3:15(KJV) “All that are with me salute thee. Greet them that love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen. It was written to Titus, ordained the first bishop of the church of the Cretians, from Nicopolis of Macedonia…”
2 Timothy 4:22(KJV) “The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen. The second epistle unto Timotheus, ordained the first bishop of the church of the Ephesians, was written from Rome, when Paul was brought before Nero the second time…”
Philippians 1:1 “Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus that are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons…”
The First Christians made criterias in selecting their Bishops.
1Timothy 3:1-2 “This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach…”
Titus 1:7 “For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not self willed, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre…”
The Office of the Bishop was given to oversee and feed the first church.
Acts 20:28 (ASV) “Take heed unto yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit hath made you bishops, to feed the church of God which he purchased with his own blood…”
THE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP IS HISTORICAL.
After the death of the apostles the church were taken care of three offices. The Office of the Bishop, the office of the Elders or Presbytery and the office of the deacons. But the office of the Bishop was so important during the first to 3rd centuries of the church because of so much schism and division that the church was experiencing so the church needed the office of the Bishop to be the “overseer”.
The Apostolic Father Ignatius written so many admonitions regarding submitting ourselves to the Bishops.
Ignatius to the Ephesians 1:9 “And that being subject to your bishop, and the presbytery, ye may be wholly and thoroughly sanctified…”
Ignatius to the Ephesians 1:12 “For even Jesus Christ, our inseperable life, is sent by the will of the Father; as the bishops, appointed unto the utmost bounds of the earth, are by the will of Jesus Christ…”
Ignatius to the Ephesians 1:13 “Wherefore it will become you to run together according to the will of your bishop, as also ye do. For your famous presbytery, worthy of God, is fitted exactly to the bishop, as the strings are to the harp…”
Ignatius to the Ephesians 2:3 “…Let us take heed therefore, that we do not set ourselves against the bishop, that we may be subject to God…”
Ignatius to the Magnesians 1:7 “It will therefore behoove you with all sincerity, to obey your bishop; in honour of him whose pleasure it is that ye should do…”
Ignatius to the Magnesians 2:5 “Your bishop presiding in the place of God; your presbyters in the place of the council of the apostles; and your deacons most dear to me being entrusted with the ministry of Jesus Christ; who was the Father before all ages, and appeared in the end to us…”
Ignatius to the Magnesians 2:7 “…Be ye united to your bishop, and those who preside over you, to be your pattern and direction in the way to immortality…”
Ignatius to the Magnesians 2:8 “As therefore the Lord did nothing without the Father, being united to him; neither by himself nor yet by his Apostles, so neither do ye do anything without your bishop and presbyters…”
Ignatius to the Magnesians 4:6 “Be ye subject to your bishop, and to one another, as Jesus Christ to the Father, according to the flesh: and the Apostles both to Christ, and to the Father, and to the Holy Ghost: that so ye may be united both in body and spirit…”
Ignatius to the Trallians 1:8-9a “In like manner let us reverence the deacons as Jesus Christ; and the bishop as the Father; and the presbyters as the Sanhedrim of God, and college of the apostles. Without these there is no church…”
Ignatius to the Smyrneans 3:1-2 “See that ye all follwo your bishop, as Jesus Christ, the Father; and the Presbytery , as the Apostles. And reverence the deacons as the command of God. Let no man do anything of what belongs to the church seperately from the bishop…”
SUBMITTING TO THE BISHOP, A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
Ever since I learned to submit my life to our bishop, God has blessed me and the ministry that God entrusted to me. A long time ago I am having so much problem in the ministry and the reason why it does not grow. And also there are some former friends who are trying to stop me in conducting Holy Unions. But now, as of this month, I have five Holy Union schedules: October 2 in Laguna, October 8-9 Pampangga, October 17 Pasig, October 22 Tagaytay and October 29 also in Tagaytay. This has never happened to me before. This only happened when I was connected and became a member of the Christian United Church under the care of H.E. Rev. Bishop David C. Strong.
These Holy Union schedules is a blessing for the church that I am now planting and starting, Jesus Christ the Good Shepherd Church of God – CUC. Because of this we will be able to make big billboards for the church and renovate the place that we are now using to make it bigger, to accommodate the people that God will bring to us. Our Bishop did not offer me any salary but God is now blessing me with so much because of submitting myself to God’s bishops. I encourage every Christian from every denomination that we must stop rebelling
against God’s authorities and let us subject ourselves to the bishops with an historic episcopate or some call it apostolic succession. Praise the Lord!!!
